Skeheenarinky School in Ballyporeen Parish in County Tipperary was built in 1858. In 2008, as part of the celebrations and commemoration that will  take place, a book will be published that will document the history of the school and the people who went to school there and the teachers who taught there. The book will be published by the Skeheenarinky Parents' Council as a fund-raising venture and will be compiled by locals Karol DeFalco and Ed O'Riordan. Ed and Karol have lived in the school teachers house (see picture below) for the past five years and both are experienced researchers and writers of local history.

It is hoped that people living within and outside the parish who have photographs, souvenirs, mementoes, or stories to tell about the school will contact us.  Naturally, any material used will be acknowledged and returned safely.  We would love to hear from teachers and/or their families and past-pupils and/or their families.

June 2007 Update:  Many Thanks to all of you who have contributed photos and anecdotes.  There is still time to submit more photos.  Contact details below.  Much of the research has been done and we are excited by the amount of material we have.  Wonderful tidbits have come to light, such as the teacher at the National School being admonished for teaching French in the 1800s, and the mother from Carrigeen who took on the School and wrote to the Commissioners in Dublin when her daughter was refused access to the school. The school material will be interspersed with local history.  For instance, who could have guessed that Ernie O'Malley conducted five weeks intensive training for the IRA at the ground of Galtee Castle in 1921??

This is 'Galty Cottage' and used to be the Skeheenarinky Teacher's house. It is known locally as 'Morrisseys' after Mrs. Morrissey who taught at the school and lived in this house with her family for almost fifty years. The house, like the school, is 150 years old and is marked as 'Galty Cottage' on early  Ordnance Survey maps.
