Galtee More
Winner of the Derby, the Two Thousand Guineas and the St. Leger in
1897
| Description: from
www.horseracinghistory.co.uk
When Galtee More and Bantry Bay
were yearlings on their breeder John Gubbins' stud farm, Mr Gubbins
(of County Limerick, Ireland)
thought more of the latter. The stud groom had the right idea
though, voicing a very high opinion of Galtee More. The horse had
almost faultless confirmation and his trainer found him charming. He
won five of his six outings as a juvenile
and six of his seven starts as a three-year-old, including the 2000
Guineas
in a canter, an easy Derby success and the St Leger at odds of 10/1
on. Before the Derby, Samuel Darling,
Snr, Galtee More's trainer, got wind of a plan to 'nobble'
his candidate, so a huge Newfoundland retriever cross dog was
procured, which guarded him admirably. The journey to Epsom was
rather fraught, a great deal of shunting on the railway and the
overnight stable was full of rats, but nothing fazed Galtee More.
Hopes of training Galtee More for the cup races as a four year old came to nought when he developed a
suspect leg, and he was sold to the Russian government,
later being exported to Germany where he sired good winners.
